Orthopedic Specialists of North County

Orthopedic surgery, also called orthopedics, is the branch of surgery devoted to the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of injuries, disorders, and diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

An orthopedic surgeon is a physician who goes on to five years of concentrated study in an orthopedic residency in the U.S. An orthopaedic specialist who desires to specialize in certain areas of the body and/or surgical techniques, will add an additional year of training in that subspecialty, called a fellowship. It is a long road to becoming an orthopaedic specialist, and requires serious commitment. Now fellowship training is not the only way to excel in a subspecialty. Some of our physicians learned their skills in the military, or in a foreign country, or have achieved outstanding success in their specialty.

In the United States, a fellowship is a specialized, comprehensive clinical training program in surgical and nonsurgical care of specific orthopedic conditions. Orthopedic surgeons who desire specialized training do so to pursue their area of intellectual interest. A fellowship involves intensive subspecialty training. Subspecialties include hand surgery, sports medicine, pediatric orthopaedics, trauma, joint arthroscopy, spine, reconstructive orthopaedics, and foot and ankle surgery.

One key benefit of a fellowship is the opportunity to train with renowned experts from around the world, and learn cutting edge techniques. But, fellowships are very competitive and only a few achieve this special training.
